Based on the comic book "Here" By Richard McGuire
Scenario
An intergenerational story about families and the special place they live in, sharing love, loss, laughter and life.. It was first published as a column in the comic magazine Raw; in 1989 and expanded to a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. [from trailer] Richard: You know, you can spend the rest of the night here if you want.
Margaret: I could spend the rest of my life here
Close: Which is better, the movies or the TV series? (2024) 'Here' It’s the fifth film directed by Robert Zemecki and starring Tom Hanks, and while it’s not a 2.5-hour epic spanning 3 decades like Forrest Gump, it somehow manages to span 65 million years. This is done using a film technique where the camera sits in one place, focusing on the grounds of a house built in the early 19th century (mostly in New Jersey, USA).
Before the house was built, including a Native American tribe
We will then follow ~5 families and their lives on site at various times. It’s not all linear, but it’s not overly convoluted, with the main plot following Al (Bettany) and Rose (Reilly) as they buy a house after World War II. There they raise their 4 children and Richard (Hanks) is played by an older / “Big” era Hanks from ~16.
The editing is sometimes good, but often unnecessarily annoying
He then meets the elderly Margaret (Wright) and we follow them as they age in her home over the decades. There are some beautiful moments, some funny moments and some sad scenes. Even if it’s a nice short film, it probably wouldn’t need at least these 2 cutscenes!
It tries to depict the small moments in life that bind the human experience together
Even if it gets close, it loses sharpness because it doesn’t stick much because it jumps around.
