American remake (in English) of the French series HPI (2021)
Scenario
Follows Morgan, a single mother of three and how thanks to her exceptional mind, she is able to help solve a crime while reorganizing evidence during her shift as a cleaner for the police department. Despite her sky-high IQ, excellent memory, and extensive knowledge of the arcane, Morgan makes a number of basic legal mistakes that anyone who has ever watched a law show on television would know not to make. In the first episode, for example, she obtains a document from a locked safe in a suspect-victim’s law office that would never be admissible in court – illegally obtained evidence.
Okay, the series starts off great, and Kaitlin Olson gives a solid performance
Nor could it be used to obtain other evidence – violation of the “fruit of the poisonous tree” legal doctrine. In episode 2, she has to be reminded to put on gloves before tampering with evidence at a crime scene, and in #3, she removes all of the documented evidence from the police station, totally breaking the chain of custody and making everything she removed no longer admissible in a court of law. HPI Remake (2021).
In this episode, she’s way too self-righteous and obstructive on a case
The series plays a lot like the TBS series Monk, where a person with borderline Asperger’s helps the police solve crimes. Again, the series is solid so far, but not as quirky or fun to watch as Monk, but it is fun to watch. Episode 3 is where it really goes off the rails, and I hope episode 4 really improves.
Tactics that would invalidate a case
She’s taking evidence from the station, she’s tampering with evidence, and she’s tainting it. REPERCUSSIONS? Zero…
Again, I hope she gets better with episode 4
It’s almost disconcerting how annoying she is in this episode. She shows little to no evidence of self-awareness or regret for her actions.
